Online University credibility?
This question is for executives, managers and / or college professors (or those that know one personally): When you are hiring an employee with a Master's or Doctorate or receiving someone who is transferring to a University who's degree was obtained solely online, do you really "esteem" this person's education? Would you hire them to work for you even if there are others who are applying for the same position who obtained a degree from an actual physical state or private university? I am open to being rebuked for being narrow minded, but I am trying to make a decision about how to go about my college education and I feel like an online degree may not be taken as seriously by true executive professionals once I've obtained my degree. I don't want to be America's guinea pig. I want the education that will get me hired, not passed over in the real world. I just want an honest answer, even if it's hard for me to take. Thank you.
Hi Faith,
That's a great question. I think how an online degree will be perceived depends on whether the degree comes from a well-known, accredited institution (e.g., public or private universities with well-known physical campuses) or from a solely online, lesser-known, and/or for-profit institution. An online degree from the well-known institutions with a physical campus is more likely to be taken seriously, partly because the quality of education is already known.
However, I also think people with online degrees are at an disadvantage because the degrees can't demonstrate your proficiency at dealing with a lot of people in person, making use of lab resources, and overall being part of an organization on a day-to-day basis. In some fields, you may also be at a disadvantage because you wouldn't have had exposure to resources others would have had (e.g., lab research, involvement in student organizations and activities, networking).
Hope this helps some ... Good luck!
