The Traditional and Modern POS System
The History of POS system can be summed up according to the manufacturers and companies who have created the machine. The first cash registers were designed to only compute the amount of products and then print a printed computation as a receipt for each customer. This type of cash register was like a calculator. After a couple of years, the cash registers had the password mechanism wherein the only ones which can access the cash register were the owners. In the early 1970's the first type of cash registers were created by IBM. More companies then created their own version of the cash register. There were cash registers which were able to record the prices for each product, the name of the product as well as the Tax for each commodity. Eventually, there were digital cash registers which would then lead to the birth of the modern POS machines.
Today, most companies and services have applied the use of the POS system as a way to distribute and sell their commodities. Hotels would use the POS system in order to register the food for each room as well as the days used per each customer. Schools would use the Point of Sale system in order to organize the tuition fees paid per student as well as the school supplies bought. Large food chains have applied the system in order to improve the sale of their food as well as to hasten food delivery and the most common industry which uses the POS system which is the grocery industry. Since most groceries have a lot of products, companies have applied the system in order to speed up computation and registration of products sold. Cashiers would only need to scan the products and the cash register would create an output for the total amount that would be paid by the shopper.
The use of the POS system is an improvement in groceries because there would be no need for a price tag for each product. Grocery owners would also be able to record all the items bought since the Point of Sale system is connected to a mainframe computer. The computer would then record all the commodities sold per day so that the owner would be able to know which items he would need to replenish and which items would he need to advertise.
